Mission & Goals

WHO WE ARE

Boulder County Nature Association (BCNA) is a 501(C) 3 non-profit organization, founded in 1982, to study and conserve the resilient natural ecosystems of Boulder County and adjacent areas of the Colorado Front Range through science, education, and advocacy.

BCNA believes its core values that define and support our mission are strengthened when all members have a voice and are encouraged to contribute. To that end, BCNA welcomes and respects all individuals of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences. BCNA does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, age, national origin, citizenship, culture, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital status, veteran status, social or economic resources or ability in any of its activities or operations.

BCNA:

  • Promotes education as a critical conservation tool
  • Supports local ecological research and conducts citizen science to augment the local ecological data set
  • Publishes and distributes books, CDs, and online papers on local nature topics
  • Advocates for the protection of local ecosystems, habitat, and biodiversity
  • Works with local governments and other stakeholders to develop land management strategies that foster ecological resiliency and sustainability

WHAT WE DO

Education: BCNA has offered hundreds of classes and field trips since 1988, all taught by top-notch instructors.

Citizen Science: BCNA runs many citizen science research projects: an eco-steward monitoring program, bird banding, Indian Peaks bird counts, wintering raptor surveys. BCNA also works with Boulder County Parks and Open Space to do owl surveys and cliff-nesting raptor surveys.

Publications: BCNA supports the publication and distribution of books and CDs about the local ecosystem.

Ecosymposium: The annual, free, one-day symposium provides an in-depth exploration of important issues impacting Boulder County and beyond.

Research Grants: BCNA offers research funding as small, one-year grants for projects consistent with our mission.

Advocacy and Community Engagement: BCNA members track local management plans and projects, identify associated issues, and participate in collaborative decision-making.

Nature-Net: BCNA and Boulder County Audubon Society jointly sponsor and administer this e-mail announcement and discussion group.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

BCNA funds come primarily from member dues, the education program, and donations.
